February is Heart Health Awareness Month. This is an ideal time to discuss dogs and how they can help with your heart health. There have been so many studies done on the benefits of having a dog in your life. I even wrote a research paper on senior citizens and the health benefits of dog ownership.
According to The American Heart Association, dog owners are 31% less likely to die from a heart attack or stroke. People who have a history of heart issues are 65% less likely to die from this when they have a dog in the home.
Dogs help us by preventing stress and we are able to recover much faster from stressful events with them in our lives. Studies have shown dog owners have lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
Dogs keep us moving. Dog owners are 34% more likely to walk the recommended 150 minutes per week. Dogs need their exercise in turn forcing us to exercise too. It is much easier to take a nice stroll or hike when you have a furry companion.
The long and short is dogs are great for our overall health. They provide an excuse to exercise and make it more fun while doing so. So, remember next time you are out walking your doggie it is helping keep your heart healthy.
Have a Barktastic week. Remember to give your furry family members lots of attention you are their entire world. ~Charley
