October 27th is the day when Mexico celebrates the pets they have lost. It is believed the pet’s souls come 5 days before the human souls so they can guide the way home. Souls of beloved pets ( dogs, cats, rabbits, turtles, lizards, etc.) cross the “Marigold Bridge” versus in United States the “rainbow Bridge” to the land of the living. They come to visit their families. Families will put up Ofrendas ( altars) to celebrate their pets. On this Ofrenda will be placed food, treats, toys, collars, blankets, photos, and a bowl of water. The ofrendas will be decorated with papel picado. The families light candle to help their pets find their way home. It is tradition to place cempasúchil ( Aztec Marigolds) so this can help guide the pets with the vibrant color and scent.
This is a wonderful tradition to celebrate with your family and include your currents pets too. I just love the way this holiday is so important to the Mexican Culture. It gives families a chance to grieve and celebrate the lives of their beloved pets they have lost. So light a candle get out their favorite toy or treat and remember the pets whom toughed your life in too many ways to express…
Have a Barktastic week. Remember to give your furry family members lots of attention you are their entire world. ~Charley
